The Monforte di Campobasso Castle was built in 1100 by Ugo II of Molise, on top of a Samnite settlement. The whole fortification underwent important changes after the earthquake of 1348 and assumed its current shape in the mid-1400s by Nicola di Monforte.
He completed the fortification works of the manor and of the same inhabited area of Campobasso in the period preceding the war between Ferrante d'Aragona and Giovanni D'Angiò for the dominance over the Kingdom of Naples (between 1459 and 1464).
