The majestic complex of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Canneto, in the locality of Canneto, in the municipality of Roccavivara (CB), stands in a very suggestive environment, on the Trigno valley bottom.
The current church dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, but the origins of the cult of the Mother of God are much older.
In Canneto, since Roman times, there was an inhabited centre.
It was the Benedictines of San Vincenzo al Volturno first and of Montecassino later, who built the current church with an adjoining monastery.
The first historical document, from the year 703, is found in the "Cronicon Volturnense". The Benedictine monks remained in Canneto until 1474.
Their departure reduced the church to a deposit of debris carried by the river.
From 1930 Duilio Lemme, a courageous priest, with the help of the people, began the work of rehabilitation.
The Sanctuary was reopened for worship in 1935.
The Shrine is lovingly guarded by the prayerful presence of the Franciscan Sisters of Charity, by the rector and by the fathers of the Institute of the Incarnate Word.
